The Lore So Far

Postby Emptybag » Mon Oct 17, 2016 7:48 pm

It started in the present day, around May.

In small groups, all around the world, an outbreak started. At first, in each city, it seemed as if it were just a random occurrence; maybe something to do with drugs. But very very quickly, people discovered that it was bigger than just that--it was full out infection. Within hours the largest cities of America were overtaken. Our little story starts in Chicago, at ground zero.

A small group of survivors, numbering maybe 12 or 20, were left to their own devices. Among them were a few key players, a cop, a mechanic, and a bartender to name a few. Besides keeping people under control and satiated, these once-normalized citizens become a semi-armed zombie slaying unit, moving Southward and narrowly escaping a firebombing on the city. From there the group gained some and lost some number, and largely followed the coattails of the military, which they eventually made contact with once they got to Mississippi. Having reunited with actual trained armed forces, the citizens were provided with real protection, able to live with full power and decent meals, and didn't have to be as scared as they were before. That is, until a couple of massive, muscular infected razed the base, forcing every person to move even more southward. Luckily the citizens had faced infected of this caliber before in a much more crowded cityscape, and were able to effectively aid the military is fighting them back. Narrowly avoiding destruction for the umpteenth time, the survivors and military made their way slowly to Georgia.
Image Now, after using up all resources in their Georgia settlement over the period of a month or so, the survivors (sans most of the military, unfortunately) are packing up again, with intentions to head South -- The old memories of a radio station operated out of a Texas city comes to the mind of a few survivors. The main problem: The main highways leading that way all are blocked. Not being able to do a mass transport without their vehicles, they head north to Sylva, North Carolina: The dangers of the winter as they travel more North become apparent, and nobody intends to put up shop long here. But everyone is weary, and this place seems like a good area to scavenge. The winter has been pretty rough here as of recently, but there is an available freeway to take southward from here once they collect what they need. At least the area seems a bit more defendable than others in the past...

Moving forward, the survivors lost the Humvee due to filling it with gas, and opted to leave it behind. A few days later, they arrive in Clinchmore, Tennessee. Being another mountain valley, perhaps this one will go over smoother than the last.

Shortly after arriving in the mountains they survivors encountered a new creature. The Screamer, which attracted zombies from miles away with its powerful screech. While meeting their new foe, some members decided to venture into the bunker. After an adventure the bunker was sealed shut tight, until the military showed up. The bunker was re-opened raided and the entrances blown to pieces. A few days later the Inn was set ablaze by some new creature. The survivors left moments after and ventured west! ! Stopped just outside Nashville by a large pile up, they've decided to spend a night at the local motel before moving on. The group finds themselves in the ruins of a firebombed Memphis, having gone there on good word of Ethan and Markus, who scouted ahead. Nothing seems to be here...bandits, or undead. The main issue will be finding a good shelter to stay in and a way to get the vehicles to cross the large trench in the road.

Leaving Memphis, they headed into Arkansas, following the Arkansas River. Caught out on the road again, seeing Ethan and Markus' cars overturned off the side of the highway, the group explored what they came to be aware was a bandit-fighting ring, where the pit the two survivors against each other to the death. Following an attack on their base in the airport, the group recovered Ethan and a Paramedic that were there...Markus was no longer among the living. Staying no longer than they had to, they continued forward to a destination away from all the distress.

Arriving in Cowlington, Oklahoma, the survivors found themselves surrounded by mountains in a plains area -- it seemed relatively normal. As time went on, it became apparent that the neighboring town was home to a new type of infected, one with a pack mentality, that tore all sentient things in their way to shreds, even other infected. Facing a few skirmishes between small clutches of the survivors and these infected, the group didn't wish to overstay their welcome -- a good idea, as when the group left they were chased out of the area by a raging pack of these infected, due to a raid on their home building earlier that day.

Escaping the wrath of the hostiles, they found no alternate route through the plains -- whether it be due to the vehicles not all being capable of off-terrain, or the roads being blocked -- the survivors find themselves in a new city: Wichita, Kansas. They didn't stay long before they noticed the buildings tagged with codes, either "Black," "Red," "Green,"or "Blue." Soon after, they came face to face with a small team of men in gas masks, intent on burning out any "black" areas, and anyone that claimed they had contact with infected. As an alternative to being burned, the group dons gas masks when these people are in the city, and stray from entering any "Black" zone. These burners have already demonstrated how serious they are via self immolation.

After most zones were taken care of by the hazmat men claiming to be CEDA, the only zones that remained were black zones. BLACK zones essentially equaled death to anyone spotted inside them, or in contact with anyone who knew they were inside them. As such, people didn't go anywhere NEAR them at all, lest they risk being burnt alive by a small clutch of men clad in hazmat suits with napalm throwers and machine guns. Those that did, were hunted down until CEDA found their job to be done or, chased far enough where nobody heard back from them again. Other people started bombing these CEDA cars. However, as CEDA were maintaining the power in the city for their own uses, many survivors found it as a necessary evil of sorts, and came to a middle ground if only to be spared their life and live with the luxury of power. These people have their own personalities and differ between different clutches of men, and many have been kind to the survivors that follow the rules. They have shown to be serious, even to the point of blowing themselves up/immolating in the case of possible contamination, so they will undoubtedly hold true to their ideas.

Suffice to say, the cleaners may have proved themselves to have motes of good within them, as nearly all of them systematically donated their lives in an effort to save both the city of Wichita and the civilians inhabiting it from the wrath of a large, modified Tank. Left with no conflict to impede their progress through the city, and with the Tank having destroyed one of two exit blockades out of the city, the survivors get in their vehicles hastily and leave ASAP, having some tipoffs from the last living member of the CEDA squad located there. They enter the Colorado Mountains across several days of travel, and reside in the valley of Mt. Arkansas for nearly two weeks, fighting their battles with what they came to know to be local bandits of the area. They weren't high in number, but due to the lack of action response once the bandits open-fired a warning to "Go back to Kansas," paired along with multiple explosive devices going off at numerous times and locations throughout the days, eventually a shootout occurred -- this of course could have been a side effect of discovering one of their identities and taking them prisoner. Needless to say, the hostage eventually escaped, and quickly received backup, resulting in a near-fatal injury of a woman and giving reason to exit the valley location, once suitable time had passed that the group felt they would not be ambushed upon their exit.

Thusly the group moved hastily again, this time with no clear direction other than 'away from here' and 'Westward.' This leads them to another mountain location, although despite the (yet unknown) short distance from their last location, a combination of inclement weather and blocked roads extended the trip well beyond what it should have been, and rendered a large amount of supplies expired in the process. So, as the group settles in, not necessarily by choice, they come to a mountain plateau town that has been transformed into a shanty. Running low on food reserves, water, and essentially out of fuel, group communication, supply runs, cooperation, and trade will be paramount to surviving in this snowwy, cold, desolate environment.

Lore Update: Ten months in.

Here's some general information most, if not all people who are still alive would know.

Infection is caused by bites only, scratches only hurt a lot.

No one has had any proper contact with CEDA or any form of military complex.

There are no carriers, those who have survived thus far are only immune to the airborne strain of the virus. There is no immunity to bites.

There is variation in turn times. Most people turn in 2-3 days, some in just barely 10 minutes. Some living as long as a week after being bitten.

It is possible to survive a bite, only if you're able to amputate the bitten area almost immediately after being bitten. Meaning taking your arm off if it got bitten, (This isn't a Guarantee of survival or even preventing the infection. Some people have proven lucky though) or literally flaying your muscle off if you got bit in the torso or back. (Mid section bites are much harder to work with and even if removed fast, it may not be fast enough.)

Special infected that have been seen or could have been seen by people (Note, none of these have official names yet, they are called different things by different people):
  • Hunter
  • Smoker
  • Boomer
  • Charger
  • Tank
  • Jockey
  • Spitter
  • X2 Alpha (screamer)
  • Organ Donor (organ-grandes)
  • Witch
  • Burnie (incineration on rage)
  • Gleamer (electrical interference)
  • Mimics
Other special infected will be introduced as we go!
