Serene moonlight, dense and silvery filtered through the feathery fronds of leaves that tiered the tall pines, almost as if a balm for the grotesque scene unfolding below. Unfortunately, the ghostly light could do little to deafen the sound to the cracking of bones and rending of flesh. Figures bustled beneath the tree canopies, human in shape to be sure, but far from the humans they once were. Many, drenched in now blackened and coagulated lifeblood tore and gurgled on gore, huddling over a felled doe tearing at its innards as intestines stretched and shredded, spattering blood, bile and feces over the masses – the glorious, yet horrid shower seeming only to embolden their work. The boisterous feasting seeing to attract more and more as some stumbled and clawed over each other, rending already decaying body parts off one another in the process, maggot ridden flesh beneath their fingernails all along the way. Lingering towards the back, however, was one clad in all black. Thick and padded, it staggered aimlessly, burdened by its weighted protection.

As it trudged from clearing to woods to clearing to woods, every swath of moonlight that bathed it seemed to reveal militant garb with the white lettering reading ‘Police’ strewn across its chest; obscured somewhat by muck and the sanguine. A thick, plastic visor dangled precisely over its face was mostly dirtied but had it eyes, it would have been able to make out its own reflection distorted by the grime. Had it been even a shadow of it’s former, proud, dignified self and was even a shred as compassionate, hopeful, loving and most importantly, living, it would have been absolutely mortified at what it had become. Eyes rotted through, practically oozing raisins at this point with slacking off flesh, dyed pale yellow and bloated from rot and puss. Jaw hanging vacantly open with teeth missing and maggots wriggling excitedly on its tongue, now riddled with burrows where they feed and nested. But alas, it all hardly mattered as it trudged on towards the ever growing crowed of the populace it once gave its life to protect.
